The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has announced that President Adama Barrow has approved the renaming of the institution to the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines (MoPEM).
In a press release, the ministry stated: “The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy wishes to inform the general public that the President of The Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow has approved the renaming of The Ministry to the “Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines” (MoPEM).”
The ministry explained that the name change is part of efforts to strengthen its oversight of the mining industry.
“The Geological Department has been under the purview of the Ministry since 2017, the inclusion of Mining is part of a broader strategy to enhance the Ministry’s capacity to oversee and support the growing importance of the mining sector alongside its longstanding responsibilities in the Petroleum and Energy sectors,” The ministry said.
The ministry further informed the public that the new name has been officially gazetted by the Ministry of Justice.
