The German Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development described The Gambia as a ‘Wonderful Country but still Very Poor’.
“Gambia and Germany have close friendship. This is a wonderful country but still [a] very poor country. And therefore, Germany invests in the future of children, eradicating hunger in the rural areas and poorness,” Gerd Muller said.
“I talked with your president an hour ago and the message is [about] children’s future, schools- education must become the first priority in the country. We thank and support SOS schools, the teachers and the representatives,” he concluded.
The minister made these remarks at the laying of the foundation stone of the BMZ project at the Bakoteh Dumpsite in Bakoteh.
SOS Children’s Villages the Gambia and Hermann Gmeiner Fonds Deutschland (HGFD) in partnership with the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) successfully secured funding from the BMZ [German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development Cooperation] to the sum of €768, 683 [GMD D42, 661, 906] to implement the BMZ Bakoteh Dumpsite Project.
The German Economic Cooperation and Development Minister at the same event also handed over to the KMC 2 quad bikes, 30 fire extinguishers, and tree planting materials for the green zone of the project.
The event was concluded with a tree planting exercise as a commencement of the planting of 500 seedlings as part of the project’s green zone.
