Former General Bora Colley, who was arrested on August 9, 2024, after voluntarily surrendering to the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Military Police at Yundum Barracks, has reportedly died in custody on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
The Gambia Armed Forces had issued a statement in August 2024 informing the public of Colley’s arrest. He was a former senior officer of GAF and an alleged member of the ‘Junglers,’ who fled the country following the departure of former President Yahya Jammeh to Equatorial Guinea in January 2017. At the time of his death, Colley was reportedly being detained while investigations were ongoing.
A man claiming to be Colley’s brother confirmed the death in an audio message sent via WhatsApp, saying, “My brother, who was a former soldier, Bora Colley, passed away. He died at the Yundum Barracks.”
Honorable Almameh Gibba, the National Assembly member for Foni Kansala, also confirmed the news to Kerr Fatou. “Yes, it’s true. He died this evening (Sunday). He passed away at Yundum Barracks, and his body was transported to Banjul Hospital,” Gibba said.
The Army Public Relations Officer, Colonel Lamin Sanyang, could not immediately confirm the report. “I am not aware of this information, and therefore I cannot confirm it,” he stated before going to press.
