The Gambian Students Association in Morocco (GASAM) is urging the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) to expedite the disbursement of remaining stipends for Gambian students studying in Morocco.

In a statement released on October 3, 2024, GASAM expressed frustration over the delayed payments, emphasizing that the stipends are not a privilege but a necessity to support students’ academic pursuits.

“We call on the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) to act swiftly in disbursing the remaining funds without further delay. The stipends are not a favor, but a necessity, provided by Gambian taxpayers to support students in their education,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the partial disbursement of stipends to a group of students, GASAM highlighted that many students continue to wait for their funds, which are crucial for covering living expenses and academic fees. The association criticized the prolonged delay, stating that it has placed an undue burden on students.

” While this is a long-overdue step forward, we emphasize that this does not resolve the hardship faced by students due to the prolonged delays. The remaining 61 students continue to wait for their stipends, and this delay is unacceptable. It is equally important to note that this stipend yet to be disbursed is for the Academic year 2023-2024, which should have been paid by May/June but is still not fully settled, and the majority is yet to receive it,” the statement continued.

GASAM highlighted that the current situation is placing an unsustainable strain on students’ finances, hindering their ability to meet essential living and academic costs. The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare of Gambian students in Morocco and will hold the Ministry accountable for resolving this issue.

“GASAM remains committed to advocating for the well-being of Gambian students in Morocco and will continue to hold the Ministry accountable.” they highlighted in the statement.

The association urged MoHERST to prioritize the disbursement of the remaining funds and ensure that all students receive their stipends without further delay. GASAM also called for greater transparency and accountability from the Ministry in handling this matter.
