Former police chief Sonko appointed as Interior Minister

Yankuba Sonko, a former chief of the Gambian police, has been appointed as an Interior Minister on Thursday. Sonko replaced Ebrima M. Mballow who is now reportedly re-deployed to the Foreign Service.

Sonko was Gambia’s longest serving police chief under Jammeh. This is the third cabinet re-shuffle done by President Adama Barrow since 2017.

Meanwhile, the Gambian leader also appointed Sheikh Omar Faye, a former soldier, as the Minister of Defence.  Until his appointment, Faye was Consul General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The secretary general and head of civil service Ebrima O. Camara has also been relieved of his appointment.  Camara has been replaced by Muhammed B.S. Jallow, a permanent secretary at the Office of the President.
