Former Banjulian lawmaker charged with incitement of violence

A former Banjulian lawmaker whose audio recording went viral insulting members of a particular social group has been charged with incitement of violence by police of Monday.

A police spokesperson Lamin Njie has told Kerr Fatou that Abdoulie Saine is yet to appear in court.

“He is currently in police custody helping us in our investigation,” Njie said.

Saine who curiously appeared to have confused Mandinka and Sosseh was heard in an audio recording on Sunday saying the latter are not natives of Gambia.

Several commentators say his statements constitute hate speech. It was condemned by all sections of the Gambian society.

Meanwhile, the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction, the party that Saine served as a lawmaker issued a statement on Monday denouncing his actions.

The APRC said Saine’s statement is in contradiction with everything they stand for as a political establishment.
