The United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Lawyer Ousainu Darboe has credited his “efforts and knowledge”, for the construction of the new roads and bridges in the Upper River Region.

“All these roads that are constructed here [URR], I went to China in 2017, I pleaded for them to help me with roads in The Gambia and they accepted. As far as it comes in the name of The Gambia, it is good. But people coming telling you it is Adama Barrow who brings these roads here, I am the one who went to lobby for the roads, not Barrow. Basse Constituency, your National Assembly Member Hon. Magassy is my witness; the National Assembly Member for Kantora Billay Tunkara is also my witness.

“When I signed with China, I took it to the National Assembly and showed them my deal with China. On that day, the Upper Niumi MP Omar Darboe stood at the National Assembly and said ‘please Darboe, if you go there help Upper Niumi also to have’. And the reason I made these MPs (Magassy and Billay) my witnesses is because they are not UDP; and they are working every day for the failure of UDP. If you see these roads were constructed here, it is because I brought the money. And I will use these roads and bridges and I will be proud of it because they are constructed out of my efforts and Knowledge,” Darboe told a UDP rally in Basse on 12 October.

The UDP leader made these remarks on Tuesday at a rally in Basse while addressing thousands of supporters.

President Barrow on 9th October inaugurated the URR Ring Road and bridges.

The development is expected to boost movement of goods and services within the Upper River Region and the sub-region.
