Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow has ordered an inquest into the death of General Bora Colley, who passed away while in custody.

The directive follows an application submitted by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice on March 10, 2025, requesting a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding General Colley’s death.

Acting under Section 11(1)(a) of the Coroners Act, Laws of The Gambia, the Chief Justice deemed it necessary to conduct an inquiry to determine the cause of death. Consequently, His Worship Dawda Phatty, Principal Magistrate of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court, has been appointed to lead the inquest.

Magistrate Phatty is tasked with conducting a thorough investigation and compiling a detailed report for submission to the Chief Justice within a reasonable timeframe.

The decision to launch an inquest highlights the judiciary’s commitment to transparency and accountability, particularly in cases involving deaths in custody.
