CAF Lifts Ban On Independence Stadium, Approves Venue For International Games

 The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the Gambia’s Independence Stadium in Bakau to host international football matches, according to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The stadium, Gambia’s largest football venue, had been previously banned by CAF from hosting international competitions, including crucial qualifiers, due to non-compliance with required standards.

However, now that the ban has been lifted, and the stadium will once again come alive with international action. The highly anticipated Gambia vs. Comoros AFCON 2025 qualifier will take place on November 15, 2024, marking the return of top-level football to Bakau.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in its announcement, expressed excitement for the upcoming match:

“Gambia vs Comoros – AFCON 2025 Qualifier to be played in Bakau. The wait is over! The moment every football fan has been waiting for is finally here. Gambia is set to clash with Comoros in a high-stakes AFCON 2025 Qualifier that promises to be nothing short of thrilling. The iconic Independence Stadium, Gambia’s fortress for international battles, will roar to life on November 15, 2024, as the Scorpions take the field. Under the dazzling stadium lights, the atmosphere will be electric, with thousands of passionate fans cheering for a Gambia victory. With everything on the line, the Scorpions are ready to strike,” the ministry of Youth and Sports announced.

Football fans across the country are eagerly awaiting the match, which could see Gambia inch closer to qualification for AFCON 2025.
