Brikama Area Council promises protesters a listening ear

On Thursday, protesters demanding efficient and improved service delivery from the Brikama Area Council have met the regional authorities to formally share their concerns over how they are being governed.

The Brikama Area Council has promised to convene an emergency general meeting in an effort to address concerns raised by a group of young people who protested for inefficient service delivery from the Council on July 24.

Last week, thirty-six young people have been arrested in Brikama for protesting against what they say were “poor service delivery” from the Council.

The protesters who were released on police bail were charged with unlawful assembly but they are yet to appear in court.

On Thursday, the governor of the West Coast Region, has asked the Council to convene an emergency meeting next week with all the ward councilors to look in to the demands of the protesters.

Governor Bakary Sanyang made the statement in a meeting with the protesters and Council officials.

Also in attendance at the meeting were National Assembly Members of Brikama North and South, the Deputy Governor of the region, CEO of the council, ward councilors, security personnel and the Alkalo of Brikama.

“… I think you have done a good job as concerned youths by forwarding your demands to the Area Council and I can assure you that we are going to look into it and that you will surely receive answers,” said Sanyang.
