Musa Ousainou Yali Batchilly, Leader of the Gambia Action Party (GAP), has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to “immediately” address the political crisis in Senegal.

In a statement released to the press, Batchilly expressed grave concern about the arrest of Senegalese opposition figures and called on the region body to address the situation without delay.

“The current chaos and unlawful arrests of opposition leaders in Senegal are deeply concerning and must be addressed immediately. I call upon the Chairman of ECOWAS, H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to intervene and promote peace and stability in our only neighbouring country, Senegal. President Macky Sall’s clinging to power and suppressing the opposition, particularly Ousman Sonko, who is an aspirant candidate for the 2024 elections, undermines democratic principles,” Mr. Bachilly said in a statement.

The GAP Leader stressed the importance of upholding democratic values, allowing fair elections to take place, and putting an end to the arrest of opposition leaders. Mr. Batchilly stated that the people of Senegal deserve a transparent electoral process that allows them to choose their leaders freely and without fear.

“I urge President Macky Sall to reconsider his decision not to run in the coming elections and to ensure a level playing field for all contesting members. Our democratic progress should not be tarnished by actions that resemble dictatorial tendencies.

“Let us come together as Africans and advocate for peace, stability, and justice in Senegal. I also call upon ECOWAS to take prompt action and address this critical situation to preserve democracy and uphold the rule of law in our region,” Batchilly preaches peace.

The outspoken GAP Leader said that unity and dialogue are essential for a better future for Senegal and the African continent as a whole.
