President-elect Adama Barrow in his maiden press conference after winning reelection promised Gambians of a new constitution with term limit before the end of his second term.
“I am a big fan of term limits, when I was launching the project (Constitutional Review Commission) that was part of my statement. I am a big fan of the absolute majority. But as I said, this is not the President’s decision. It passes through processes. The document got to the National Assembly; they disagreed with the document. We tried to negotiate through mediators [but] we couldn’t agree. It is suspended. But I assure you I want that project to be part of my legacy. I assure you, you will have a new constitution before the end of my term. I am committed to it and I will make sure it happens,” Barrow said.
The newly elected president made these remarks on Tuesday at his maiden press conference at the State House less than a week after being declared winner of the Saturday’s polls.
However, the president-elect did not specify the length of the term limit; and whether the rejected CRC draft would be the one to be resuscitated or otherwise.
