It is with a heavy heart yet a profound sense of gratitude for history that I reflect on the life and legacy of Hon. Alhaji Kalilu Foday Singateh. Our journey together began in 1953 at Kinteh Kunda Janeya Primary School and was rekindled in 1957 at Armitage High School. At Armitage, he shared the classroom with renowned economist Dr. Sidi C. Jammeh and the distinguished legal expert Fafa Mbai. Though Kalilu’s time at Armitage was brief, he transitioned into the civil service before stepping into the political arena, driven by an unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges facing Gambians.
Kalilu Singateh became a beacon of hope for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in Lower Badibou. As the first PPP parliamentary representative for the region, he championed the welfare of his constituents and served in several capacities, eventually rising to the position of Minister of Health and Women’s Welfare in 1973. It was during this time that I reconnected with him in Washington, D.C., where he inspired many Gambians in the diaspora to return and contribute to the development of our beloved nation.
A stalwart of the Marlborough constitutional conference in London, which paved the way for Gambia’s independence in 1965, Kalilu Singateh was instrumental in dismantling colonial oppression. His dedication to the nation saw him representing the Gambia on numerous international platforms, where he advocated tirelessly for the country’s progress.
As Lower Badibou’s first parliamentarian, his political career spanned from 1959 to 1984. Kalilu Singateh was a man of wisdom, resilience, and unshakable commitment to the welfare of his people. His advocacy for good governance, justice, and equity earned him widespread admiration. He was particularly passionate about improving the lives of farmers and the underprivileged, leaving behind a legacy rooted in fairness and service.
Hon. Alhaji Kalilu Foday Singateh exemplified humility, dedication, and patriotism. His contributions to the Gambia continue to inspire hope and gratitude. As we bid him farewell, we celebrate a life well lived and a legacy that will endure for generations.
In solemn reflection, we express our heartfelt gratitude to Hon. Alhaji Kalilu Foday Singateh of Saba, Lower Badibou, for his unparalleled service to the Gambia. May Allah grant him eternal rest in Janatul Firdaws. Amen.
