The Gambia Police Force has reported a tragic incident at the New Wharf in Banjul, where 25-year-old Essa Colley, a compliance officer with Global Tracking and Maritime Solutions (GTMS), lost his life in a drowning accident.

“The Police responded to a tragic drowning incident at the New Wharf, Banjul. Which occurred in the early hours of 16th November 2024, between 00:00 and 00:30. Preliminary investigations reveal that Essa Colley, a 25-year-old compliance officer with Global Tracking and Maritime Solutions (GTMS), fell into the sea while attempting to urinate after waking up in an empty container near the edge of the wharf. Despite witnesses hearing his cries for help, they were unable to rescue him as he was swept away by strong waves. Personal items, including his helmet, shoes and clipboard, were recovered at the scene,” the police stated.

Following a day-long search, the police confirmed that Essa’s body surfaced around 6:00 p.m. and was identified by his brother, Salifu Colley. The body was then retrieved and transported to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The Gambia Police Force extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Essa Colley during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
