The Gambia’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Squad is without 16 players due to injuries, positive Covid-19 cases and travel restrictions.

“Pursuant to our initial statement to call off our friendly international matches (Gambia vs Algeria/ Gambia vs Syria) as a result of the unavailability of the playing staff, especially goalkeepers, The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) would like to further update the general public as the situation continues to get out of hand:

“The below listed 16 players and five officials aren’t available to be involved with the technical preparations for the training camp due to positive Covid-19 infections, travel restrictions to Qatar and injuries.

“Please see the list of the unavailable playing staff: Lamin Jallow; Bubacarr Jobe; Baboucarr Gaye; Omar Colley; Ebrima Sohna; Saidy Janko; Sheikh Sibi; Noah Sonko Sundberg; Yusupha Njie; Steve Trawally; Ebou Adams; Ibou Touray; Modou Jobe; Able Jallow; Modou Barrow; and Yusupha Bob,” Gambia Football Federation (GFF) announced on its Facebook page.

The GFF further stated that five officials are also not available due to positive Covid-19 cases and travel restrictions to Qatar. They are Ebou Faye – Head of Delegation, Ousman Drammeh – Team Manager, Daniele Caleca – Fitness Coach, Alhagie Marong – Goalkeeper Trainer and Omar Touray – Media (Cameraman).

The Gambia is in Group F alongside Mali, Tunisia and Mauritania. The Scorpions will kick off their maiden AFCON match against Mauritania 11 days from today, which will be on 12 January 2022 at 5pm, in Cameroon.
