Six police officers have been charged with murder over the killings of 3 protesters in Faraba at the Banjul Magistrate Court on Thursday.
The officers who were charged with 3 counts of murder in connection to the Faraba incident denied any wrongdoing.
The officers are Baboucarr Cham, Bala Musa Fatty, Mamadou Jallow, Alieu Camara, Musa Badgie and Nuha Colley. The case was later transferred to the High Court since the magistrate court does not have the jurisdiction to hear it.
The six officers could not be granted bail because of the seriousness of the crime they are charged with. The six officers were remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison.
Last week, natives of Faraba who were protesting against the activities of a mining company, Julakay, were involved in a confrontation with the police leading to the death of 3 boys.
Both the country’s former police chief who later resigned, Landing Kinteh, and interior minister Ebrima Mballow denied giving order for the use of live arms.
Following the incident, Gambian leader Adama Barrow visited the village and promised justice for the victims.
Barrow has commissioned an independent inquiry into the killings and the investigation has already began.
