Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces

The Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has stated the need to have his personnel possessed the right capability and training to defend Gambians against any form of aggression.
“There is an absolute need to ensure that the Gambia Armed Forces possess the right capability and training to successfully and efficiently defend the Gambian People, its political sovereignty and territorial integrity against any form of aggression. The Defence policy provides a theoretical basis of the national defence to guarantee national security against threats and aggression,” Lieutenant General Yakuba A. Drammeh said at the validation of the maiden national defence police on Tuesday.
Lieutenant General Drammeh is delighted that the policy gives prominence to the core values and interest of The Gambia and embodies its security and citizenry.
“A country’s Defence Policy is an embodiment of its foreign policy, paramount to which is national interest. Against this backdrop, I took time to carefully study the shared Draft Defence Policy and I am delighted that the drafters did a wonderful job by taking into account and giving prominence to our national core values and more so our national interest which embodies the security of the Gambia and her citizenry,” he said.
The Army Chief said the absence of national defence policy has to some extent contributed to the lack of the basic capabilities to establish a strong defence and security structure.
It is his firm conviction that the document would serve as a framework to harmonize collective national interest with available resources in designing a strong defence strategy and national security.
The Gambia’s army chief made these remarks on 21st September 2021 at the opening of the two-day validation workshop of the Gambia’s first Defence Policy led by the Ministry of Defence.
The two-day validation will end on 22nd September 2021 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre
