The Gambia Press Union Vice President has hailed the GENCED/ECOWAS training for journalists and Civil Society Organisations [CSOs] on peaceful election participation.

“It is very important, because journalists and civil society actors play a key oversight role in promoting peaceful and credible elections. Therefore, having understanding of the lessons learnt from other countries on how media and CSOs promote peace in elections, is important,” Muhammed S. Bah, said.

The Gender Centre for Empowerment and Development (GENCED West Africa) with the Directorate Political Affairs, ECOWAS Commission and the Office of the Resident Representative of the ECOWAS in The Gambia organised the one-day training on Saturday at a local hotel in Senegambia.

The session aimed to strengthen the capacity of the media and the civil society to enable their peaceful participation in The Gambia’s electoral cycle 2021-2023, starting with the December 4 presidential election.

The workshop dubbed ‘an encounter with media practitioners on the role of the media in promoting participatory democracy in The Gambia’ attracted 15 journalists and 10 representatives from the CSOs.

Subject matter specialists from Ghana and The Gambia shared with the participants useful tips on how to participate in elections peacefully
