The United Democratic Party [UDP] has strongly condemned the attack on members of its voter registration Coordinating committee in Kanilai.
In a video footage making the rounds on social media, members of the said members of the party were this morning surrounded by a group of men, pushed and slapped in the home of former President Jammeh.
Reacting to the incident, the UDP National Organising Secretary, Talib Ahmed Bensouda posted on facebook: “I condemn this attack on our monitoring team in the strongest of terms and I reiterate that they have the right to visit every registration center across the country without harassment or provocation. Our party’s Deputy Organising Secretary Mr Ebrima Dibba (My Deputy) has been attacked and injured and our party vehicle has been damaged.”
Saidina Alieu Jarju also frowned at the attack and posted on Facebook: “The people of Kanilai should be told the truth. The attack on the UDP is a threat to democracy and peace. This is uncalled for and those disgruntled elements should be arrested and prosecuted for assault. UDP as a party has all the rights to visit any village/town in the Gambia. If you disagree with their policies that don’t warrant any physical attack. We have a nation to build and we shall not allow [a] few elements to put this country in the fire.”
