Title: Chief Superintendent Mamanding S. Dibba, Spokesperson, GID

The spokesperson of Gambia Immigration Department [GID] has said that they will make sure that attackers of their post in Gunjur are ‘swiftly apprehended and brought to book’.

“The matter is being investigated. We will make sure that those involved are swiftly apprehended and brought to book,” Chief Superintendent Mamanding S. Dibba said in a-phone-interview with GRTS on Friday evening.

Commenting further on the attack by unknown individuals which left two immigration officers seriously injured and currently hospitalised, Dibba said they do not know the identities of the attackers and their motive, which he described as ‘battling’ to them.

“Right now, we don’t know exactly the identities of these assailants. All we know now is that they are a group of 10 to 15 people who assaulted the immigration post, injuring people [officers]. We don’t know the motive behind the attack because these are people who did not ask for anything when they stepped into the premise. They did not take anything. They did not ask for money. They did not ask for valuables. And when they were going, they did not pick anything from the immigration post. They did not take money from the officers. It’s baffling to us up to this moment as to what could be the reason for the assault on our officers.”

The Gambia Immigration Department on Wednesday, inaugurated a post in Gunjur and Kartong in the West Coast Region. In the early hours of Friday around 3am, unknown individuals reportedly armed with cutlasses and other weapons attacked the post in Gunjur at the sea side, and seriously injured two officials currently hospitalised.

Kerr Fatou has further confirmed this afternoon that the reason and identities of the assailants are yet to be established.
