Barrow left for Brussels donor meeting on a commercial flight

The Gambian leader told the national broadcaster that he decided to fly on a commercial flight to cut cost.

President Adama Barrow has left Gambia for Brussels where he is expected to attend an international conference to seek funding for his government’s 5-year development plan.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini and Barrow will on Tuesday participate in International Conference for The Gambia.

Barrow is seeking a funding of about $2.4 billion for development as contained in the National Development Plan.

Gambia faces several economic challenges including rising poverty and unsustainable public debt at 130% of its GDP.

Barrow left most of his ministers behind, something critics consider a wise move as government seeks further cuts on cost.

The donor meeting is expected to be attended by senior United Nations officials and also the President of ECOWAS Commission, Jean Brou.

Brou said at a regional meeting last week that ECOWAS is working on sustaining international attention on the small country to support its peace-building and development priorities.

The regional body has intervened in Gambia to flush out the former dictator after he refused to step down claiming irregularities in an election widely considered to be credible and fair by observers.

The regional forces are still in the country securing the presidency jointly with Gambian security forces.
