Gambia commemorates International Women’s Day
On the occasion of International Women’s Day [IWD] 2021, Gambia today celebrates the achievements of women and raise awareness of the public on gender equality.
The theme of the celebration is- “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world.”
Unlike previous years due to Covid-19, the commemoration turns from holding ground ceremonies to Television interviews, panel discussions, online webinars etc.
In a televised speech, Fatou Kinteh, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare said her ministry will use the occasion as an opportunity to hand over cheques to women groups in the Kanifing Municipality.
“We at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare will also use this opportunity to hand over cheques to women groups in KM [Kanifing Municipality] that have qualified for the first round of women enterprise fund, and have been trained on entrepreneurship.”
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
It is marked in different fashions worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for gender equality.
IWD is celebrated annually on March 8th, as one of the most important days of the year to: celebrate women’s achievements; raise awareness about women’s equality; and lobby for accelerated gender parity, among others.
