Former President Yahya Jammeh, founder of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), has announced his decision to retake control of the party by removing interim chairman Yahya Tamba from his position. The announcement, made on January 22, 2025, via a WhatsApp audio message, marks a significant shift in the party’s leadership dynamics.

Jammeh cited internal divisions and a lack of progress under Tamba’s leadership as the reasons for his decision. He expressed disappointment in the party’s trajectory, emphasizing that despite efforts by some members, internal conflicts and backstabbing have hindered the APRC’s growth.

“I entrusted the interim chairmanship and leadership for the second time, but things have not worked as they should. Therefore, I have decided to take over the leadership of my party and will not entrust it to anyone again,” Jammeh declared.

He stressed that the decision is final and urged all APRC members to acknowledge his authority.

“With immediate effect, I have relieved Yahya Tamba of his duties as chairman and interim leader. This decision has been long overdue. While I thank him for his service, I cannot allow the party to continue on this downward trajectory,” Jammeh stated.

The former president expressed unwavering faith in Allah, asserting that no human could destroy the APRC. He assured party members that his decision was carefully considered and that he had been observing the party’s internal challenges while waiting for the right moment to act.

Jammeh dismissed concerns about potential defections following his decision, stating, “Those who wish to leave are free to do so, and we will thank Allah for their departure. At the same time, the door remains open for anyone who wishes to join the APRC without conditions.”

He emphasized the need for unity and collective effort to achieve the party’s vision for national development. “If we come together with clean hearts and a shared mindset, we can transform The Gambia into something extraordinary, by the grace of Allah,” he said.

Jammeh warned against indiscipline and intolerance within the party, particularly acts of disrespect or insults. “Anyone who insults others or their parents has no place in the APRC. Let them try it and see. My presence in Equatorial Guinea will not prevent me from taking action,” he cautioned.

While announcing Tamba’s removal, Jammeh clarified that other executive members remain in their positions. He urged those who have been distant due to internal challenges to return, assuring them of a more structured and disciplined environment under his leadership.

“This is a new chapter for the APRC. I will not tolerate nonsense anymore. Let this be clear to all party members,” he concluded.”

Jammeh’s decision to reclaim the APRC leadership underscores his determination to restore unity and discipline within the party amid ongoing challenges.
