The Brikama Area Council (BAC) has pledged D200,000 to assist the victims of the Kafuta road accident as they recover. This commitment was announced following the council’s recent support for those affected by the incident.
On Monday afternoon, Chairman Yankuba Darboe, via the council’s official Facebook page, revealed that BAC had donated a variety of medications worth over D30,000 to the 20 victims currently receiving treatment at Ndemban Clinic. Additionally, nearly D12,000 in cash was reimbursed to the victims’ families to cover medical expenses incurred since their admission.
The council emphasized its continued support for the victims throughout their recovery process. They also called on philanthropists, individuals, and institutions to collaborate with BAC to provide further assistance to those affected by the accident.“The Council will continue to support the victims through their recovery process, and we appeal to philanthropists, individuals, and institutions to collaborate with us to render adequate support to the victims for their speedy recovery,” the statement reads.
In a subsequent update, BAC pledged an additional D200,000 to assist with the victims’ ongoing treatment. The council acknowledged that while the pledged amount is substantial, it may not cover all the medical costs, especially for those who may require extended hospital stays due to the severity of their injuries.
“The Council pledges D200,000 to support the Kafuta Road accident victims. This amount is significant, but might not cover the entire expenses of victims treatment, as some are expected to stay longer in the hospital. Today’s support is a portion of the pledge we committed ourselves to.” Chairman Darboe stated.
The Gambia Police Force, in a press release issued on January 4, 2025, confirmed that the accident occurred when a truck ran into a jubilant crowd celebrating a football match in Kafuta. The police updated that 44 individuals were involved in the incident, with one fatality and 43 others injured. Many of the injured were referred to a clinic for further medical attention.
