The National People’s Party (NPP) has celebrated the recent ruling by The Gambia’s Supreme Court as a significant victory for democracy and the rule of law. The case, brought by the United Democratic Party (UDP), sought to invalidate the appointments of six Presidential Advisers but was dismissed by the court.
In a statement, the NPP commended the judgment, describing it as a reaffirmation of The Gambia’s constitutional integrity and a testament to the centrality of the rule of law in the country’s democracy.
“The National People’s Party (NPP) acknowledges and deeply appreciates the landmark judgment delivered by the Supreme Court of The Gambia on December 12, 2024, in the case brought by the United Democratic Party (UDP), which sought to invalidate the appointments of six Presidential Advisers, including Dembo Byforce Bodjang, Lamin Cham, Dodou Sannoh, Henry Gomez, Lamin K. Saidy, and Sulayman Camara. This verdict has, once again, reaffirmed the integrity of our constitutional framework and underscored the rule of law as the cornerstone of our democracy,” NPP said. The party emphasized that the ruling validated the legality and constitutionality of President Adama Barrow’s appointments, highlighting the President’s adherence to the law in exercising his duties.
“This judgment further confirms that the UDP’s lawsuits can best be described as vindictive and sentimental, devoid of legal merit. We take this opportunity to reiterate the firm commitment of His Excellency President Adama Barrow and the National People’s Party to the independence of the judiciary. The NPP holds in the highest regard the principle of non-interference in judicial matters, ensuring that our courts remain impartial guardians of justice and equity for all citizens, irrespective of political affiliation,” NPP said. The NPP also used the opportunity to critique the UDP’s approach in filing the legal challenge, framing it as a moment for reflection.
“Among the appointments targeted were those of Dembo Byforce Bodjang, Dodou Sannoh and Lamin Cham—three individuals of impeccable character and enduring dedication to the democratic ideals and political struggles of the UDP since its inception in 1996, up to the collapse of Coalition 2016. Their sacrifices for the party, including their unquestionable loyalty to UDP leader ANM Ousainou Darboe during his most trying times, remain etched in the annals of Gambian political history and discourse.
“Without prejudice to their concomitant sacrifice, Mr. Bodjang, Mr. Sannoh and Mr. Cham deprived themselves of numerous privileges in the country, including turning down public appointments under the former government, driven by their unswerving commitment to the cause of seeing Mr. Darboe rise to power. For them, and many others in the UDP, Mr. Darboe was more than just a leader; he was almost a demi-god, a figure whose vision and struggle they revered with the utmost regard and esteem.” they said.According to the NPP, the individuals’ only perceived misstep was their continued allegiance to President Barrow and the ideals of the NPP after Mr. Darboe fell out with the President following his dismissal from government.
“While the NPP considers this a clear demonstration of the UDP and Mr. Darboe’s chronic history of intolerance towards personal political choices and their tendency to vilify loyal and principled individuals who refuse to toe the party line, it undoubtedly stands as a confirmation to the integrity and maturity of Mr. Bodjang, Mr. Sannoh and Mr. Cham. These individuals chose to prioritise the pathway to national development championed by President Barrow over petty partisan allegiance. Their decision reflects a broader commitment to the principles of democracy and governance, where loyalty to the greater good takes precedence over personal or political affiliations. The NPP remains proud to have such individuals among its ranks, exemplifying the values of patriotism and selfless service to The Gambia,” NPP said. The NPP reiterated its unwavering commitment to constitutional democracy, emphasizing the importance of judicial independence and respect for the rule of law.
“As a party, the NPP wishes to emphasise the importance of respecting the rule of law and upholding democratic institutions. We urge all Gambians, regardless of political affiliation, to prioritise the collective welfare of the nation above partisan interests. Let us work together to build a Gambia where the diversity of opinion is respected, and unity of purpose drives our development. We commend the Supreme Court for its clear and balanced interpretation of the Constitution and reaffirm our respect for the judgment delivered. This decision is not just a victory for the individuals involved but a triumph for justice and the rule of law in The Gambia. The NPP remains resolute in its mission to foster unity, development, and democracy in our beloved nation,” the statement concluded.
