President Adama Barrow was briefed on Tuesday about “Exercise Kansala 2024,” a joint military exercise aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening national security. The update was delivered through a State House press release.

Scheduled to take place from December 19 to 23, the exercise will feature military drills and community outreach programs, including health screenings and other forms of community support.

During the briefing, President Barrow is quoted as commending the military for organizing exercises that maintain operational readiness and physical fitness among personnel. He stressed the importance of the military’s role in fostering stability in a democratic society without interfering in democratic processes.

“He emphasised that in a strong and stable democracy, the military has a crucial role without interfering in democratic processes. President Barrow reminded the senior command that when the military adheres to its designated role, it fosters a supportive and peaceful environment, ultimately assuring the people, investors, and development partners. He stated, “The private sector is key in development, but will always look for a peaceful environment.” The statement said.

The statement highlighted that President Barrow emphasized the importance of the military as a noble profession, urging members to uphold professionalism in their duties while assuring them of his government’s unwavering support.

Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Momar Cham, underscored the need for the Gambia Armed Forces to continually train and equip its soldiers. He expressed gratitude to the President for his support and for allowing the armed forces the space to focus on their mandate. He also elaborated on the collaboration with sister services under the Ministry of Interior in executing the Field Exercise.

Brigadier General Sait Njie, Army Commander, provided an overview of the operations involved in the Joint Field Training, which was guided by the principle: “The best form of welfare for troops is first-class training.”

The National Security Adviser, Abubakar Jeng, along with other security personnel, attended the briefing. The exercise forms part of the Chief of Defence Staff’s diary, introduced under the Security Sector Reforms launched in 2017.
