An eyewitness has confirmed to Kerr Fatou that at least ten people were injured during a land dispute fight between Perai Tenda Village and Waliba Kunda Village in the Tumana Constituency, Upper River Region.

“The fight between Perai Tenda and Waliba Kunda in Tumana Constituency, Upper River Region, stemmed from a long-standing land dispute. Initially, seven chiefs ruled in favor of Waliba Kunda Village, despite them not farming in that area. Perai Tenda Village appealed to the high court, which overturned the chiefs’ decision and allowed both villages to farm in the disputed area. However, Waliba Kunda Village claimed to have documents from the high court supporting the chiefs’ ruling. Despite the chiefs’ directive for Perai Tenda Village to continue farming in the area this year, both villages clashed, resulting in over ten injuries in Perai Tenda Village,” an eyewitness from Perai Tenda Village told Kerr Fatou.

The former National Assembly Member for Tumana Constituency, Faday NM Drammeh, expressed his disappointment over the fight on his Facebook page.

“Today, on the 11th of July 2024 and the 5th of Muharram 1446 AH, two neighboring communities, Perai Tenda and Waliba Kunda, clashed over farmland, with both claiming rightful ownership. This is not the first, second, or third clash; for years, the two communities have been at each other’s throats. The government of The Gambia is aware of the problem but is doing little or nothing to address it. These communities, once each other’s keepers, used to live in peace and harmony. Under the leadership of Adama Barrow, The Gambia is becoming a lawless country where people are taking the law into their own hands,” he wrote.

All the reported injuries are from Perai Tenda Village. We were unable to contact anyone from Waliba Kunda Village to get their side of the story. This is a developing story, and we will keep you updated.
