Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the Minister of Information, announced on Friday during a press conference that the Gambian government has reduced the price of fertilizer by D50 compared to last year.
“The Gambia government has reduced the price of fertilizer from D1150 to D1100 per bag, adding a subsidy worth D24 million on top of last year’s 50% subsidy. It means the government will foot 50% of the price of fertilizer for farmers this year. All geared towards ensuring that farmers get access to cheap fertilizer but also get it on time so that they can farm, and the farming season will be good, which will boost Gambia’s economy. Currently, in the country, we have 479,000 bags of fertilizer, equivalent to 23,000 metric tons, which is already in the country. An additional 100,000 bags, that is, 5000 metric tons, will arrive in the country. So farmers are assured of an ample supply of fertilizer,” stated the Minister during the press briefing.
Dr. Ceesay further assured that the Gambian government remains steadfast in supporting farmers with the necessary inputs and equipment to enhance agricultural productivity in the country.
