The families of people who have disappeared under former dictator Yahya Jammeh have asked the Government to reveal information acquired by the state during the investigation into their disappearances.
In a statement issued on Thursday, friends and families of people who were forcibly disappeared under Jammeh said they will hold a vigil to remember lost loved ones.
“With this action, we demand that the government immediately releases information on the fate of the disappeared and returns to us their remains,” the Centre for Human Rights Violations has said in a statement.
The vigil will be held at the Supreme Court premises in Banjul on Tuesday, April 17.
Based in Kololi, the Gambia Centre for Human Rights Violations has been established by prominent activist to protect the rights of people and ensure justice is delivered for crimes committed under Jammeh.
“More than a year ago, the Ministry of the Interior exhumed the remains of our friends and family members. To date, we have no information about their whereabouts or their fate. We have petitioned the Ministry of the Interior tirelessly for the truth without success,” the centre said.
“The families and friends of the disappeared have an alienable human right to mourn the loss of their loved ones and to bury them with dignity. The government of Gambia has a duty to ensure that right is respected.
