The Dock and Maritime Workers Union of the Gambia has ousted its president, Lang Bala Saho, through a vote of no-confidence during their Annual General Meeting on Saturday.

Fafa Sanyang, Senior HR and Welfare Officer of Dock Labour Company Gambia (DLCG), presented the financial statement at the meeting, noting that recent member contributions over a three-week period amounted to D10,680.

“The meeting proceeded to the vote of no confidence regarding the suspended President Lang Balla Sawo. After the vote, 99.8% of the members decided that he must discontinue his role due to the ongoing investigation. Following the vote of no confidence against the suspended President Lang Balla Sawo, the AGM of the Dock and Maritime Workers Union proceeded with resolutions. The members passed resolutions to select Yusupha Cham as president and Saikou Colley as vice president,” Fafa Sanyang told Kerr Fatou.

The entire interim executive committee was also confirmed to complete the remaining two-year term of the outgoing president.

Fafa Sanyang called on the members to unite and focus on collective goals in the workplace. He urged them to forget past issues and open a new chapter, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and a shared vision for the future. Sanyang highlighted the need for merit-based promotions through key performance indicators (KPIs) and transparency in all financial transactions. He assured the members that an AGM would be held annually to review and disclose the financial transactions of the previous year.

The AGM concluded with a vote of thanks from Interim President Yusupha Cham. He promised to deliver as expected and urged union members to act as his advisers, encouraging them to report any irregularities during his tenure in office.
