Marr Nyang and Omar Champion Cham have reportedly been detained following their attempt to stage a protest on Sunday. The demonstration was aimed at voicing dissatisfaction with the persistent disruptions in ferry services.

The group’s intention to protest was preemptively halted when the Gambia Police Force rejected their application for a permit. The decision to deny the permit was based on recommendations from the Office of the Inspector General of Police, which expressed concerns over potential security risks. These apprehensions are heightened by the proximity of the upcoming OIC summit, an event that will draw significant attention and resources to ensure safety and order.

The refusal to grant permission for the protest and the subsequent arrests have sparked a conversation about the balance between public security and the right to peaceful assembly. As the situation unfolds, further details are expected to emerge regarding the implications of these actions for civil liberties in the Gambia.
