Tragedy struck as a boat that departed from Bakau, en route to Spain, capsized at sea, resulting in the loss of lives.
While official confirmation remains elusive, Kemo Bojang, a Youth Councilor at Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) and a Bakau resident affirmed the devastating news via his Facebook account:
“The news about the youths of Bakau is true. We’ve lost a lot of young people today, most of them our friends and people we grew up with. The boat reached Spain but unfortunately ran out of supplies and a lot of them couldn’t stand the starvation and died on the way. Boats from Bakau to Tenerife usually take a week, but unfortunately, they were in the water for almost 2 weeks. All these young people wanted was a better life for themselves, their families, and their country.
“Always remember my brothers, who embarked on a perilous journey seeking hope and a better future but, tragically, never completed it. Their stories, struggles, and dreams will forever be a somber reminder of the urgent need to address corruption, impunity, justice, and the need to fight for the people that really matter. For all of us who have been tasked to steer the affairs of this country, I hope we reflect before we sleep on how we have failed these young people,” Kemo Bojang said.
The boat’s ill-fated journey began in Bakau, situated within the jurisdiction of the Kanifing Municipal Council, with its destination set for Spain.
