Without the Rule Of Law, Our Country Will Never Develop—Essa Mbaye Faal
By Ramatoulie Jawo
Essa Mbye Faal, the former lead counsel for the Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission, said in an interview with Kerr Fatou that the Gambia will never develop without the rule of law.
“Without the rule of law, our country will never develop. No matter the kind of President we have, and that was the reason I was running (for the Presidency) and that is the reason I will run (for the presidency) in the future. If I should, we have to have laws in this country,” he said.
Mr. Faal said Gambians should ensure that they have a country of laws, where laws are implemented regardless of who is the beneficiary or who is the victim.
Mr. Faal said the Gambia enjoyed the most peaceful elections, “but are our elections corruption-free?”
“I leave that to all the Gambians to ponder and ask themselves what they want. Remember, the beginning of Jammeh’s downfall stemmed from the demand for electoral reform. Have we had that electoral reform? We are using the same playbook, we are using the same personalities, and the same institutions. So those who were doing this are the same people doing it here?” he said.
The former lead counsel of TRRC, Essa Faal, was an independent candidate in the 2021 presidential election.
