Gambia’s new bridge built to connect Senegal’s south, Cassamance, to its North, Dakar and also Gambia’s north and its south banks will be temporarily closed to traffic for about 15 days this month, said a Government press release on Thursday.

The Works Ministry and management of the National Roads Authority said the bridge which was called the Bambatenda – Yellitenda bridge will be closed to all traffic from 15th of June 2019 to 30th of June 2019.

“The closure is necessary to allow the contractor to carry out the final finishes to the bridge. During the period of this closure, the Gambia Ferry Services will continue the service of ferrying people, vehicles and goods across the river,” Government said in a press release.

“The Ministry and the NRA apologies sincerely to the travelers using this corridor for this inconvenience and would like to inform the public that service on the bridge will resume on the 1st of July 2019 and the bridge will be open to all vehicular traffic including trucks.”

The bridge was opened few months ago by presidents Adama Barrow and Macky Sall. The inauguration came at a time when the Senegalese elections was approaching.

Critics said the early opening of the bridge which was not ready for trucks at the time was politically motivated to help Sall in his election.
