‘FJC did not ask me not to cooperate with TRRC’

27

Alagie Kanyi, a witness in the ongoing trial of tampering with a Truth Commission witness, has told the High Court that Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay did not ask him not to cooperate with the Commission.

Ceesay, a former speaker of the National Assembly and Yankuba Touray, a former Local Government Minister, are facing allegation of tampering with a TRRC witness.

Kanyi is a former soldier who admitted to participating in the execution of 11 people under the supervision of the former military leader Yahya Jammeh and his colleagues.

He said prior to his appearance before the Commission, Ceesay and Touray contacted him and asked him not to take the Commission seriously.

During cross-examination on Monday, Kanyi told the court that the two accused persons have never told him not to cooperate or give misleading testimonies to the TRRC.

About FJC

“From your conversation with the 2nd Defendant (Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay), has she asked you not to cooperate with the TRRC?” Lawyer Lamin Camara asked Kanyi.

“No, she hasn’t,” said Kanyi.

“Do you remember your first conversation with her?” asked Camara.

“Yes, I remembered. I remembered only one conversation between me and her,” Kanyi replied.

“Who initiated the first conversation between you and her?” asked Camara.

“I don’t know,” Kanyi replied.

“Did the 2nd defendant (FJC) in any way dissuade you from appearing before the TRRC?” asked Camara.

“No,” Kanyi answered.

“Did she in anyway encouraged you to lie before the TRRC?” asked Camara.

“No,” Kanyi replied.

“Did she in any way encourage you to conceal evidence before the TRRC?” asked Camara.

“No,” Kanyi replied.

Meanwhile, the case resumes on May 29 for continuation.
