Gambia’s 1st Catholic Bishop
Thousands of Christians mainly from the Catholic community on Saturday converged at the Independence Stadium to witness the consecration of the first Gambian born Catholic bishop.
Bishop Monsignor Gabriel Mendy writes his name in history as the 4th bishop since the inception of Catholic Diocese of The Gambia.
The ordination made him succeed Bishop Robert Patrick Ellison. He is also the first Gambian to be voted as a Catholic bishop for more than 60 years since the country became a diocese of its own.
Bishop Gabriel Mendy holds PhD in Systematic Theology and was born in Lamin. He was elected bishop on Nov. 30, 2017.
Senior government official, diplomats and religions leaders from different Christian denomination observed Saturday’s consecration across the country.
