Army equipped navy for effective sea surveillance

The Gambian navy plays a crucial role in monitoring Gambian waters for foreign vessels engaged in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The navy has arrested at least three vessels for IUU in the country’s waters in 2018.

The Gambia Armed Forces in quest to fulfill their mandate in safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation has equipped the Navy’s Operation Centre (MOC) with Radar and modern VHF radios, as well as upgraded the Automatic Identification System (AIS).

The newly installed radar and upgrades will provide the Navy with “a bird’s eye view” to track and get real time data on activities within the Gambian waters.

These important system will enable the navy to have 24/7 real time surveillance on activities in Gambian waters and make analysis for better informed decisions on naval activities.
