Members of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence and Security on Wednesday commenced a capacity-building on the review of security institutions reports and budget analysis.

The three-day training which aims to strengthen the capacity of Hon. Members to perform effective oversight of the security sector is staged in partnership with DCAF.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on Defence and Security, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, in his opening remarks underscored the benefits of the session for the members.

‘This training will provide the Committee the rare opportunity to understand security sector budgeting; as well as analytical skills to conduct effective scrutiny and oversight over the sector,” he said

Njie said the government annually spends huge sums of taxpayers money on security and security related equipment, but reports and budgets of security institutions are usually classified in such a way that it is very difficult to review and analyse to make informed decisions.

He assured their partners that all that the Standing Committee on Defence and Security in line with the security sector reform policy, would continue to advocate the necessary support for the security sector reform to ensure that the gallant men and women in uniform operate as required by law.

Chairman Njie expressed no doubt that the resource person for the training, with a wealth of experience would do justice to the chosen topics for this training.

He finally urged all participants to take the training seriously and proactively participate in the discussion.
