The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters continues its tour of detention facilities across the country.

The tour by the committee is meant to avail its members the opportunities to get firsthand on the status of Human Rights compliance on the handling of detainees at the facilities.

The Chairman of the committee, Hon. Madi M.K. Ceesay had engagements with officials of the various detention facilities visited, including Barra, Amdalie, and Farafenni.

Chairperson Ceesay told authorities at the visited facilities that the committee’s visit is not a witch-hunting, but a fact-finding.

“We are doing this to avail the Committee firsthand information on the status of Human Rights compliance on the handling of detainees,” he said.

Improvements on this aspect are noted by the honourable members in their quest to ensure compliance with human rights regulations by the Prison and the Police.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters is among three others currently on a tour on their oversight functions at various Ministries, Department and Agencies in accordance with section 102 and 109 of the Constitution and clause 95 of the Standing Orders.
