Sierra Leonean police have on Saturday revoked the curfew imposed in the country, amid Wednesday’s violent protests.

“In view of this, the curfew in the affected places (Western Area, Makeni, Magburaka, and Kamakwie) is hereby revoked, with immediate effect,” the statement dated 13th August 2022, signed by William Fayia Sellu, Inspector

 General of Police said.

The development came after the “security situation has drastically improved nationwide” and in particular, the places that were seriously affected, owing to the invocation and subsistence of Military Aid to Civil Power (MAC-P), the statement added.

The violent protests in the country on  10th August 2022, led to the declaration by the Sierra Leonean Vice President, of a nationwide curfew.

The curfew was on the following day revised and restricted to places seriously affected by the violent protests which were Western Area, Makeni, Magburaka, and Kamakwie.

Violent clashes between the protesters and security have claimed lives on both sides.

The violence attracted the attention of the ECOWAS Commission, which condemned the violence, called for law abiding and the prosecution of those responsible.
