Judoka Faye Njie Wins Gambia’s First-Ever Medal At Commonwealth Games

The Gambia’s Judo sensation, Faye Njie has won a silver medal at Commonwealth Games, becoming the country’s maiden medal at the competition.
Faye competed in the final of the Men’s -73kg at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham against British Daniel Powell, who he lost to.
“This fight will go down in the Judo hall of Fame.Gambia’s first ever silver🥈🥈🥈at the Commonwealth Games,” GNOC said in a brief statement.
It is the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games that the Gambia has won a Silver Medal.
The former British colony, before this moment never won a medal at the games, despite years of participation.
However, in the first round of the delayed 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, the Gambian Judoka, after 3 minutes 53 seconds by Ippon [a fighting technique in Judo], lost to Makhmadbekov from Tajikistan in October.
Despite the loss, he remained Gambia and Africa’s number 2 in 73kg.
Njie is one of the 16 athletes representing Gambia at the Commonwealth Games.
