Vice President, His Excellency Badara Aleu Joof has said that President Barrow has asked him (VP Joof) to tell the local government to allocate a site for the relocation of people living around the Kotu bridge.
He said the reason for the President’s request is that some people are residing in the waterway which is affecting them every year.
“The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow has asked me to tell the the local government to find a site for them, which will be demacated; and we relocate them (residents) from where they are. So that we will not have this perennial problem all the time,” he said.
His Excellency Joof said the measure the should have been taken long time ago; but the President has now decided for them to take them to avoid disaster.
“Every year we come to the same places. We keep on seeing the same problem. All we can do is to distribute rice and oil,” he added.
VP Joof said there most be a permanent structural long term solution to the problem.
VP called on Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda to work with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Ministry of Environment so that when they want to relocate the residents, they would mobilise resources and move them.
“I know the Mayor (Talib Ahmed Bensouda) also has his own answersble and accountable, when it comes to this kind of things because the jurisdiction is under is municipality,” he said.
The Vice President, Badara Adama Joof, and the Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, with senior officials of his Ministry today visited the affected areas caused by the continual heavy downpour which has destroyed many houses in the country.
