The Foundation Against Trafficking and Irregular Migration (FATIM), has yet again facilitated the return of seven Gambian girls trafficked to Oman.
“This morning (Monday) at around 08:00. We have received 7 girls. They came via Dakar, but (they) couldn’t reach here (Gambia) early, as the driver wasn’t a fast one. They left Dakar at around 18:00 hrs yesterday (Sunday). Now it is left with only one (girl) of this contingent. Negotiations are in high gear for her release,” Ebrima T. Sanyang, FATIM PRO told Kerr Fatou.
Prior to the return of this batch (the 5th batch) in the Gambia, FATIM and partners have previously facilitated the return of four batches of the girls from Oman. The first batch comprising four girls arrived on 13th June; the second batch of two girls arrived on 18th June; and the third batch consisting four girls arrived on 25th June 2022.
PRO Sanyang informed that the return of the girls has been funded by a Gambian philanthropist, but didn’t give details of the individual; adding that the 7 girls have been handed over to their families.
The returnees were trafficked to the Middle East country for domestic work and exposed to hard labour, and sometimes sexual harassment, causing some of them health complications, according to a statement by the foundation on 13th June 2022.
One of the returnees has granted this medium an interview on her experience in Oman and about the journey. The interview would air tomorrow at 1:00pm gambian time.
