Hon. Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Defence said almost 85% of security personnel of his ministry reside at home instead of the barracks due to lack of infrastructure.

“That is not good for the security sector of this country because, if 85% of our personnel are not staying in campus then we cannot have the security we need as country,” he said.

Minister Njie added that lack of mobility is also a serious challenge for his ministry.

“Mobility is very important because it will make movement easy for personnel so that they can do their duties as expected,” Njie said.

He went on to say that his ministry will need a staff college for the training of its security personnel.

Rohey Bittaye Darboe, Permanent Secretary at the ministry said they want a centre where the security personnels can be equipped with skills that will benefit them after their retirement.

“We want our security to have skills which will benefit them because most of them when they are retired they don’t have any other job to do. That’s why most of them are becoming watchmen which is very bad,” she said.

Samba Jallow, Vice Chair of the Defence Committee assured the minister that their problems will be addressed because the committee is their for them.

The ministry highlighted the challenges before the the National Assembly standing committee on Defence and Security on Wednesday while presenting its activity report.
