The leadership of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction party has dismissed claims that they may have held discussions with President Adama Barrow over potential political alliance in country’s coming elections.
President Barrow, an independent candidate who has won the country’s former dictator Yahya Jammeh at polls in December 2016, was backed by seven political parties and an independent.
The former estate businessman who resigned from the United Democratic Party to lead the coalition now appears to have confrontation with his former party.
There is an increasing doubt that he will be the party’s presidential candidate coming 2021 presidential elections though he has demonstrated enough will to seek second term.
And since tensions emerged, Barrow has met former members of the APRC, their executives and few independences including chiefs and religious leaders, arousing suspicions that he may plan to form his own political party or form an alliance with APRC next election.
“Let me make it very clear that APRC as a political party in our new dispensation do not hide behind the scene. So we have no association with any political party including President Adama Barrow as we speak,” said Tombong Jatta, the leader of the party on Tuesday.
“President Barrow has never approached us. We have no talks with him as regards to coming together. If we ask a political party go into negotiations with any political party or individual it is obligatory on us to inform our people. We cannot do those things and then keep quiet.”
Jatta, who would not confirm whether Jammeh is in contention to lead the party in future election, said the former strongman is one of the founders of APRC and they are “grateful to him for what he has done for the country”.
