The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) on Thursday announced signing an agreement with Eleven Sport to broadcast matches of the Domestic First Division League.
For the first time in the history of Gambian football, the matches of men and women in the country’s top-tier league would henceforth be broadcast to a global audience beginning with the current campaign.
GFF President, Lamin Kaba Bajo informed that his federation has in turn contracted a local media outlet (Eye Africa TV) to provide the feeds to serve as the local partner to Eleven Sport for the start of this project.
He added that the agreement cost the GFF nothing; and it would receive 20% of the revenue generated.
“Eleven Sports will provide all the technical aspects of the broadcast. The project is developed by FIFA to help those Member Associations whose leagues aren’t on television by broadcasting them and at the same time look to generate revenue through merchandising and advertisement to be shared amongst all the parties, including the GFF. GFF will receive 20% of the revenue generated,” he said.
Bajo revealed that starting next season, no third party would be allowed to transmit any form of coverage either in part or whole, via IPTV, internet or mobile transmission, until the end of the licensed period; noting that the federation would inform the domestic clubs of the decision.
“The project is expected to have a positive effect on our football because it will offer a global platform for our leagues to be watched by millions of viewers across the globe, expose our players to the global sports market which can in turn lead to professional contracts,” the GFF President stated the benefits of the broadcast agreement.
The second GFF Vice President, Ebou Faye highlighted the importance of the project to the Federation and the public.
“The project will relieve clubs of the burden of recording their matches for purposes of the records and marketing of players as the videos of matches will be accessible to them for their needs,” he said.
The Project Manager, Baboucarr Camara gave an overview of the project, saying “the project will start this year (2022) and will end in 2026”.
