IEC Chairman Declined To Reveal Subject Of His Conversation With President Barrow

The chairman, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Alieu Momar Njai has declined to reveal the subject of the conversation he had with President Adama Barrow earlier today at McCarthy Square during the president’s voting.
“What I talked to the President about is not for me to reveal to everybody. That’s not really healthy. I can say, as far as we are concerned, our mandate is to make sure we conduct free, fair and transparent elections,” he said in response to this reporter’s question.
This is the second that the IEC Chair had a conversation with the President on Election Day, the subject of which is not disclosed to the people whom both of them work for. The first was during the 4thDecember 2021 presidential election.
Meanwhile, on the call of the two advocacy groups, R2K Coalition-Gambia and the Democratic Union of Gambian Activists (DUGA) for the commission to ‘immediately’ suspend the National People’s Party (NPP), for not holding congress after clocking 2 years; Chairman Njai said they would conduct their congress after elections.
“You cannot hold congress during the electoral programme. You cannot do it. It’s not only them (NPP), but other parties didn’t do their congress for two years. But we are saying, it’s the electoral cycle year now, after that everybody will hold their congress,” the IEC Chair further responded to another question by this reporter in an interview at McCarthy Square in Banjul.
