The Brikama Area Council (BAC) has sympathized with the people of Foni following reported skirmishes on Sunday between the Senegalese soldiers and MFDC forces.

The BAC expressed sadness and concern over the devastating impact of the situation at the border communities in the Fonis.

“The entire management, councillors, and staff are deeply sad and concerned with the devastating impact of the ongoing hostilities on the border communities in the Fonis.

“The Council will work with partners to support assessment efforts to determine the proportion of the population affected by the hostilities and jointly undertake short-term measures of immediate needs and the longer-term issues of supporting lives and livelihoods and resilience in meeting basic needs,” BAC said in a statement today.

While the council commiserates with the affected families, it has extended thoughts and prayers with the internally displaced persons and fervently pray for the immediate end of the hostilities, the statement added.

The BAC statement came after hundreds of families from the Gambian communities living along the border were displaced due to a reported exchange of gunfire between Senegalese soldiers and MFDC forces near the border settlements on Sunday.

The affected border communities include Ballen, Gilanfari, Karunorr, Gikess and Kappa where bullets reportedly landed in the villages of  Gilanfari and Sitanunku in the Gambian territory, but no casualties reported yet.
