On day 2 of National Assembly Election nomination, 11 of the 12 candidates vying for various constituencies in the 9th April parliamentary election under Citizens’ Alliance (CA) ticket earlier today submitted their papers to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) regional offices.
In the Kanifing Municipality (KM), Famara Mambury vying for Bundung Ka Kunda Constituency and Nenneh Freda Gomez, for Serekunda West Constituency under the Citizens’ Alliance (CA) ticket submitted their credentials to IEC office in Kanifing.
Similarly, in the West Coast Region (WCR), Alieu Nyang, for Old Yundum Constituency and Balanding Jatta, for Sanementereng Constituency sponsored by the party also submitted their details to the IEC officials in Brikama.
Shortly after submitting his credentials to the IEC, Famara told the journalists that he is the ‘best’ candidate for the Bundung Ka Kunda Constituency.
“In my constituency, we have been faced with so many difficulties for more than 57 years without any proper solution. So I feel that I am the right candidate to solve those inadequate problems we are facing in Bundung.
“We are faced with inadequate water supply. Some areas in Bundung before you get water you have to spend the whole night fetching water. We are faced with inadequate electricity supply in Bundung. I believe if I am elected, I can raise those voices at the National Assembly,” Mr. Mambury told the Journalists.
Nenneh Freda Gomez, for Serekunda West Constituency, promised to be a representative of women at the National Assembly, if elected.
“As a woman who at a very early age has been fighting for the cause of women, has been fighting for the issues that have to do with women’s agenda and at this point in time, we are talking about under-representation of women in all aspects. So I thought it is very befitting that the time is right to only be in the background fighting other issues but to come out here and present myself to be in the most important house to represent the women’s agenda, the women’s cause and the youth as well,” she said.
Other CA candidates, Alpha MK Lowe for Lower Nuimi and Samba Nying for Upper Nuimi in the North Bank Region; Samba MP Bah for Niamina Dankuku, Alieu Bah for Niani, and Gibbi Dem for Sami in Central River Region; and Yankuba Sanneh for Jarra East in Lower River Region also submitted their qualifications at IEC offices in their regions. However, Lamin Fatty for Brikama North in the West Coast Region could not make it today and he is rescheduled to appear tomorrow (7 March 2022).
Meanwhile, the National Assembly, one of the 3 arms of government, is crucial in a democratic process through its oversight, law-making, representation and resource allocation functions, among others.
The candidates are expecting to hear from the commission, the fate of their application in the coming days. This time, candidates would be allowed to submit outstanding details for consideration within the nomination period scheduled to end on 13th March.
