Demba Ceesay, Director General of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG), has revealed that 90% of individuals arrested for drug-related offenses in 2024 are Gambians.
Speaking to West Coast Radio on Friday, Ceesay disclosed that out of 1,208 drug-related cases recorded last year, over 1,024 involved possession, while fewer than 200 were classified as trafficking offenses. He emphasized that the majority of those caught in possession are young people.
“We had 1208 cases drug cases last year of which less than 200 are trafficking, over 1024 are possession. And who are those involved in possession? 80% are youths. If you look at the arrestees within this number of cases, 1228 persons were arrested between January 1st and December 31st, 2024, of this, 1024 are between the ages of 18 and 35. So the majority are actually Gambian youths.” Ceesay stated.
He further highlighted that contrary to public perception, the majority of those apprehended are not foreigners.
“And also, if you look at even statistics, nationwide, 90% of our arrestees in 2024 are Gambians, not foreigners. So these are our brothers, our sisters, our uncles, our school children. So basically, the Gambian youths stand to benefit,” he added.
